Air Conditioning in Roodepoort
Roodepoort sits high on the western ridges of Johannesburg, where the city gives way to koppies, kloofs and some of the best natural scenery in Gauteng. Aircon Master installs, repairs and services air conditioning across Roodepoort and the West Rand edge: Florida, Constantia Kloof, Weltevreden Park, Little Falls, Honeydew, Wilgeheuwel, Helderkruin, Horison, Strubens Valley, Radiokop, Ruimsig, Roodekrans, Wilro Park, Groblerpark and the Roodepoort CBD.

High ground, big skies, bigger temperature swings
Roodepoort is one of the higher parts of greater Johannesburg, with much of it lying at around 1,700 to 1,800 metres above sea level. That altitude shapes the climate. Summer days are warm to hot and very sunny, and the thin, clear air means the sun feels intense through west-facing glass. Evening thunderstorms roll in off the ridges with plenty of lightning and, at times, hail. Winters are properly cold, especially in the valleys and on open ground near the ridges, with frost on many mornings from June to August.
Put together, this means that air conditioning in Roodepoort earns its keep in both seasons. Many of our Roodepoort clients use their units as much for heating in winter as for cooling in summer, and a well-chosen inverter unit handles both efficiently. It also means we pay particular attention to protecting outdoor units from hail, lightning and wind on exposed properties.

The Botanical Garden, Kloofendal and Clearwater
Roodepoort’s best-known landmark is the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, on the border with Mogale City, where the Witpoortjie Falls drop down the cliffs and a pair of Verreaux’s eagles has famously nested for many years. It is one of the most loved green spaces in Gauteng, and the suburbs around it, including Roodekrans, Wilro Park and the areas along Malcolm Road, are some of the most scenic places we work.
Closer to the centre of Roodepoort, the Kloofendal Nature Reserve protects a stretch of rocky ridge with walking trails and the historic Confidence Reef, where the Struben brothers found gold in 1884, shortly before the main Witwatersrand gold rush. It is a reminder that Roodepoort, like much of the West Rand, owes its existence to gold mining. Clearwater Mall in Strubens Valley is the area’s main shopping destination, and Florida Lake, with its park and water, is a local favourite. We plan our routes using Hendrik Potgieter Road, Christiaan de Wet Road, Ontdekkers Road and the N1 Western Bypass, which link the different parts of Roodepoort.
Roodepoort neighbourhoods and what they need
Florida, Florida Park and Florida Hills
Established family homes, many from the 1950s to the 1970s, close to Florida Lake and the Florida shopping area. Older distribution boards and uninsulated ceilings are common, so the electrical side of the job often matters as much as the air conditioner itself.
Constantia Kloof, Weltevreden Park and Little Falls
Larger homes, many on sloping ground with views, plus a growing number of complexes. Open-plan living areas with large windows need careful sizing, and many estates and complexes need approval for outdoor units.
Honeydew, Wilgeheuwel, Radiokop and Ruimsig
Newer estates, townhouse complexes and smallholdings on the north-western edge. Estate rules, long pipe runs on double-storey homes and, on smallholdings, longer electrical cable runs are the usual considerations.
Helderkruin, Horison, Groblerpark and Strubens Valley
Popular family suburbs with a mix of older homes and complexes, many on the slopes below the ridges. Hot western rooms in summer and cold rooms in winter are the main complaints.
Roodekrans, Wilro Park and the Botanical Garden side
Homes near the ridges and the garden, often with established trees and rocky ground. Condenser positions need to avoid leaf fall and suit the terrain.
Roodepoort CBD, Laser Park and industrial areas
Offices, shops, workshops and light industry. Dust from Main Reef Road traffic and old mine land means units need more frequent servicing.
Installing air conditioning on Roodepoort’s slopes
A large number of Roodepoort homes, especially in Constantia Kloof, Weltevreden Park, Helderkruin and Roodekrans, are built on sloping or rocky ground. That brings a few practical challenges that we plan for from the first visit.
- Stable, accessible condenser positions. We look for a level, solid base or a strong wall bracket that can be reached safely for servicing, not a spot perched above a drop.
- Protection from wind and hail. Exposed positions on ridge-top homes can take a beating. We choose sheltered sides where possible and can fit hail guards.
- Drainage. Condensate water must drain away without running down walls or across paving. On slopes, we route it carefully.
- Rocky ground. Some properties sit on rock just below the surface. If a plinth is needed, we allow for that in the quote.

Heating and cooling in one system
Because Roodepoort winters are colder than in many other parts of Johannesburg, heating is a big part of the conversation. Inverter air conditioners work as heat pumps in winter, moving heat from the outside air into the room. Even on cold mornings, a good inverter unit delivers several times more heat than the electricity it uses, which makes it one of the most efficient ways to heat a home with electricity. It is also safer than open-element heaters and gas heaters, especially in bedrooms and children’s rooms.
On very cold mornings, you may notice the outdoor unit pause heating for a few minutes and release a little steam. That is the defrost cycle, clearing frost from the outdoor coil, and it is completely normal. If you want to use your air conditioning mainly for heating, tell us, and we will choose units and positions with that in mind.
| Room | Typical unit | Roodepoort tip |
|---|---|---|
| Main bedroom | 9,000 to 12,000 BTU inverter | Go up a size if the room faces west or has a large window facing the valley. |
| Children’s bedroom | 9,000 BTU inverter | A safer alternative to plug-in heaters in winter. |
| Lounge with a view | 18,000 to 24,000 BTU | Large windows facing the ridges bring in heat in summer and lose it in winter. |
| Home office | 9,000 to 12,000 BTU | Position the unit so air does not blow directly onto the desk. |
For most rooms, an inverter wall-mounted split is the best choice. For larger homes, we can also look at ducted systems or multi-split options.

Estates and complexes in the north-west
Honeydew, Wilgeheuwel, Radiokop, Ruimsig and Little Falls have grown quickly, and many homes there are in security estates or sectional-title complexes. These usually have rules about where outdoor units can go, how they must be screened and what colour trunking should be. In sectional-title schemes, trustees generally have to approve anything that changes the outside of a unit. We give you a written proposal with photos, the unit model and its noise level, the pipe route and the drainage plan, ready to submit. If the estate asks for changes, we adjust the plan before any work starts. In closely spaced complexes, we pay particular attention to keeping condensers away from neighbours’ bedroom windows.
Smallholdings and larger properties
Towards Ruimsig, Honeydew and the edge of Muldersdrift, there are still many smallholdings and larger properties with cottages, workshops and outbuildings. These are lovely places to live, but they bring electrical challenges: long cable runs from the main board, older wiring in outbuildings, and supplies that are more exposed to lightning. Before we add air conditioning, our electricians check that the supply can take the load. Where needed, we install sub-boards, upgrade cabling and fit surge protection. If you rely on a generator or solar backup, we will tell you honestly whether it can start and run your units.
Offices, shops and light industry
The Roodepoort CBD, the offices around Constantia Kloof and Clearwater, and the light-industrial areas such as Laser Park all rely on air conditioning to keep people productive. We install cassette units and splits in offices and shops, dedicated cooling for server cupboards, and larger systems where needed. Dust from busy roads and industrial activity means that commercial units in these areas usually need servicing every three to six months. We can set up a maintenance schedule with a written report on each unit. See commercial air conditioning for more.
Lightning and power protection
The Highveld has some of the highest lightning activity in the world, and exposed high ground like Roodepoort’s ridges gets more than its share. Lightning strikes nearby, and surges when power returns after an outage, are a leading cause of damage to the control boards in modern air conditioners. Every unit we install goes on its own correctly rated circuit, and we strongly recommend surge protection at the distribution board. Our registered electricians can also upgrade older boards, add earth leakage protection and issue an electrical Certificate of Compliance if you are selling or letting.
How we plan a Roodepoort installation
Every installation starts with a visit. We measure each room, note which way the windows face and how much sun they get, look at the ceiling and roof, and check the distribution board. We then walk the outside of the house with you to find the best position for each outdoor unit, taking into account the slope, the wind, the trees, security and the neighbours. After the visit, you receive a written quote that lists the units, the installation, any extra pipe length, brackets or plinths, and the electrical work as separate items, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
On installation day, we protect your floors and furniture, core-drill cleanly through the wall, run and insulate the pipework, connect the unit to its own breaker, and vacuum and pressure-test the system before releasing the refrigerant. We then test the unit in both cooling and heating modes, check the drainage, tidy up and show you how to use and clean it. If you are comparing companies, our guide on how to compare air conditioning companies explains what a good quote should include.
Repairs, regassing and servicing
The faults we see most in Roodepoort are control boards damaged by surges, refrigerant leaks, clogged filters and coils, blocked drains, and outdoor units damaged by hail or blocked by leaves. Every repair starts with a proper diagnosis and a written price. If a unit is short of gas, we find and repair the leak first, then regas it to the correct pressure.
We recommend a service once a year for most homes, ideally in late winter so the unit is ready for summer, and twice a year if you use it heavily for both heating and cooling. For more on West Rand servicing, read our article on keeping your aircon running on the West Rand.
Roodepoort questions
Which areas do you cover around Roodepoort?
Roodepoort CBD, Florida, Florida Park, Florida Hills, Constantia Kloof, Weltevreden Park, Little Falls, Honeydew, Wilgeheuwel, Radiokop, Ruimsig, Helderkruin, Horison, Groblerpark, Strubens Valley, Roodekrans, Wilro Park, Discovery, Laser Park and the neighbouring parts of the West Rand.
Is air conditioning worth it for heating?
In Roodepoort, very often yes. Inverter units heat efficiently and safely, and many of our clients use them more in winter than in summer.
My outdoor unit steams in winter. Is it broken?
Probably not. That is the defrost cycle clearing frost from the coil. If the unit stops heating completely or shows an error code, call us.
Can you install in estates and complexes?
Yes. We prepare the proposal with photos and unit details for your trustees or estate office, and install once approved.
What does it cost?
We give written quotes after seeing the job. Our aircon cost guide explains the main factors.
Can you protect my outdoor unit from theft?
Yes. We can fit a steel security cage that is bolted in place and still allows enough airflow, and we try to choose positions inside your secure perimeter.
Do you service units installed by other companies?
Yes. On the first visit we check and clean each unit, record its details and let you know about any problems we find.
