Air Conditioning in Centurion

Aircon Master looks after air conditioning in Centurion from Irene and Doringkloof in the east to Eldoraigne, Wierda Park and Zwartkop in the west, and from Lyttelton down to Rooihuiskraal and The Reeds. This page is written for Centurion specifically: the way homes and offices here are built, the heat patterns you actually get, the estate rules you will run into, and what a sensible installation, repair or service plan looks like in this part of Tshwane.

Why air conditioning in Centurion needs its own approach

Centurion sits between Pretoria and Midrand at roughly 1,400 metres above sea level, a little lower and noticeably warmer than much of Johannesburg. Summer afternoons regularly sit in the low thirties, and the heat tends to build steadily from late morning because so many homes here have large north- and west-facing glass doors that open onto patios and gardens. By the time most people get home in the late afternoon, a lounge with a wall of west-facing sliding doors can be several degrees warmer than the rest of the house. That single pattern drives a lot of the work we do in Centurion: rooms that are uncomfortable for four or five hours a day, every day, from November to March.

Winter is the other half of the story. Clear Highveld nights in June and July push morning temperatures close to freezing, and many older Centurion homes were built without ceiling insulation or with insulation that has since compacted. A modern inverter split unit running in heat mode is one of the most cost-effective ways to heat a bedroom or a home office, so most of our Centurion clients now want one system that does both jobs well rather than a fan in summer and an oil heater in winter.

Centurion is also a place where a lot of people work from home or run small businesses out of converted garages and flatlets. A room that is used for eight or more hours a day needs a correctly sized unit, a quiet indoor head that does not blow directly onto the desk, and a condenser that will not annoy the neighbours. Those details matter far more than the brand name on the front panel.

Landmarks and neighbourhoods we work around

If you have driven past SuperSport Park on a match day you will know how quickly the roads around Centurion’s CBD fill up. We plan Centurion call-outs with that in mind, and we are used to working around the busy pockets near Centurion Mall, the Centurion Lake precinct and the Gautrain station on West Avenue. Knowing which side of the N1 a street falls on, and whether it is quicker to come in via John Vorster Drive or the R21, is the kind of local detail that turns a vague “morning slot” into a technician who actually arrives when promised.

The older, leafier parts of the area around Irene are some of our favourite places to work, partly because the houses are so varied. The historic Irene village, the Irene Dairy Farm and Smuts House Museum at Doornkloof give that corner of Centurion a character that is very different from the newer estates further south. Homes in and around Irene and Doringkloof are often older, with thick walls, deep verandas and high ceilings, and they need a different approach to both unit sizing and pipe routing than a new double-storey townhouse in Eldo Glen.

Centurion, zone by zone

Centurion is big, and the housing stock changes a lot from one side to the other. This is how we think about it when we quote.

Irene, Doringkloof and Pierre van Ryneveld

Larger stands, older homes, many with thatch lapas, face-brick walls and generous roof spaces. The main challenges here are long pipe runs to reach a discreet condenser position, and the need to protect the look of the property. We often route pipework through the roof space rather than down an external wall, and we take care to seal every wall penetration properly because older plaster and face brick do not forgive sloppy drilling. In Pierre van Ryneveld, closer to the Waterkloof Air Force Base side, homes are more modern but the same attention to the exterior finish applies.

Eldoraigne, Wierda Park, Clubview and Zwartkop

Established family suburbs with a mix of 1980s and 1990s homes and newer infill townhouses. Many have tiled roofs over uninsulated ceilings, so bedrooms on the western side heat up badly. These are classic “one unit per bedroom plus one in the lounge” homes, and a staged approach works well: install the room that bothers you most this year and add the rest later using the same electrical supply we plan in from the start. Around Zwartkop, near the raceway and the nature reserve, we see more large properties with outbuildings and home offices.

Highveld, Techno Park, Hennopspark and Lyttelton

This is where most of our Centurion commercial work happens. Highveld Techno Park and the office parks along the N1 and around Hennopspark are full of two- and three-storey office buildings, showrooms and light industrial units. Here the jobs are about ceiling cassettes, ducted systems for open-plan floors, server rooms that need cooling around the clock, and maintenance contracts that keep everything running through the summer peak. In Lyttelton the housing is older and the work is mostly residential repairs and replacements of tired fixed-speed units.

Rooihuiskraal, The Reeds, Heuweloord and Kosmosdal

Newer suburbs and security estates dominate the southern side of Centurion, with a lot of sectional-title complexes and estate homes built in the last twenty years. The big consideration here is estate and body corporate approval. Many estates specify where condensers may be mounted, what colour trunking must be, and whether units may be visible from the street. We are used to working to those guidelines and can give you a clear drawing of the proposed positions to submit for approval before any work starts.

Midstream, Blue Valley and the estates towards Midrand

The large estates on the Midrand side of Centurion tend to have bigger, newer homes with open-plan living areas and double-volume spaces. A single wall-mounted split rarely handles a double-volume lounge well, so we often recommend a larger inverter unit positioned to throw air across the space, a pair of smaller units, or a ducted system if the roof space allows it. If you are closer to Midrand than central Centurion, our Midrand air conditioning page covers that side in more detail.

What we install in Centurion homes and offices

Most residential jobs in Centurion are wall-mounted split units, and for good reason: they are efficient, quiet, relatively affordable and easy to maintain. We install inverter models almost exclusively now, because the running-cost difference over a Centurion summer is significant and inverter units handle winter heating far better than older fixed-speed designs.

For offices in Highveld Techno Park and around the CBD we install ceiling cassette units where there is a suspended ceiling, because they spread air evenly across a room and keep walls free for furniture and whiteboards. For whole-floor cooling, or for owners who want no visible indoor units at all, a ducted system or a VRV/VRF system can be the better investment. See our commercial air conditioning page for how we approach larger projects.

Rough sizing guide for Centurion rooms

Every quote starts with a site visit, but this is the rule of thumb we use for typical Centurion rooms with standard ceiling heights. West-facing glass, uninsulated ceilings or double-volume spaces push you up a size.

Room Typical size Usual unit Centurion note
Bedroom 12 to 16 m² 9,000 BTU inverter Go to 12,000 if the room faces west under an uninsulated roof.
Home office 10 to 20 m² 9,000 to 12,000 BTU Position the indoor head so air does not blow straight onto the desk.
Open-plan lounge 30 to 45 m² 18,000 to 24,000 BTU Large sliding doors onto the patio are the main heat source.
Double-volume living area 40 m² and up 24,000 BTU or two units Common in Midstream, Blue Valley and newer estate homes.
Small office or consulting room 15 to 25 m² 12,000 BTU or cassette Plan for heat from people, computers and lighting.

Repairs, services and regassing

When an air conditioner stops cooling in the middle of a Centurion summer, the most common causes we find are blocked filters and dirty coils, a failed capacitor or fan motor on the outdoor unit, a refrigerant leak at a badly made flare joint, or a condensate drain that has clogged and started dripping inside. Most of these can be diagnosed on the first visit. Our air conditioner repair technicians carry common spares so that simple faults are fixed the same day.

A unit that is low on gas has a leak somewhere. Topping it up without finding and fixing the leak simply means paying for another regas a few months later. We pressure-test, find the leak, repair it and then charge the system correctly. If you want to understand what a proper service involves before you book, read what’s included in an aircon maintenance service, and if your unit has simply stopped cooling, try the seven quick checks first.

For most Centurion homes, one maintenance service a year before summer is enough. Offices, rooms that run all day, and units near busy roads or construction sites need a service every six months. Filters should be rinsed by the owner every few weeks in summer; it takes five minutes and makes a real difference to both cooling and electricity use.

Weather, power and the Hennops River

Three local conditions shape the way we install in Centurion.

Summer storms and hail. Highveld thunderstorms arrive fast in the late afternoon, and hail can damage the thin aluminium fins on an outdoor unit. Where a condenser has to sit in an exposed position, we can mount it under an overhang or fit a protective hail guard that still allows airflow.

Lightning and power dips. Gauteng sees a lot of lightning, and power dips and surges after outages are hard on the electronics in inverter units. We recommend a dedicated circuit with the correct breaker for every unit and, in many homes, surge protection at the distribution board. Our electricians can handle the DB board upgrade if your board has no space or no earth leakage protection.

Low-lying ground near the river. The Hennops River runs through the heart of Centurion past the lake, and heavy summer rain can cause flooding in low-lying areas near its banks. If your property is close to the river or in a dip where water pools, we mount the outdoor unit on a raised bracket or plinth rather than directly on the ground, so that a flash flood does not destroy the compressor.

Estates, complexes and approvals

A large share of Centurion homes are in security estates or sectional-title complexes. In a sectional-title scheme, the conduct rules generally require the trustees’ written consent before an owner changes the exterior appearance of a building, and fitting an outdoor unit to a wall counts. Estates run by a homeowners’ association usually have architectural guidelines covering condenser positions, screening and colours.

What we do to make approval easy:

  • A site visit to agree the best indoor and outdoor positions with you.
  • A written quote that lists unit models, positions, pipe route and electrical work.
  • Photos or a simple sketch you can submit to the trustees or estate office.
  • Neat, colour-matched trunking and condensers placed where they meet the guidelines.
  • Access arrangements made with estate security in advance, so the technician is not stuck at the gate.

If a condenser has to go on a boundary wall near a neighbour’s bedroom, we will tell you, and we will suggest an alternative position. Noise complaints are one of the most common reasons estates ask for units to be moved, and it is much cheaper to get it right the first time.

Electrical work that goes with the installation

A new air conditioner needs a properly rated supply. In many older Centurion homes around Lyttelton, Eldoraigne and Wierda Park, the distribution board has no spare ways, no earth leakage unit, or wiring that would not pass inspection today. Because Aircon Master also employs registered electricians, the electrical side is done in-house rather than by a separate contractor. If you are selling your home, our electricians can also inspect the installation and issue an electrical Certificate of Compliance, which is required when a property is transferred.

How a Centurion job runs

  1. First contact. Call or WhatsApp 060 959 2231 or use the quote form. Tell us the suburb and what you need.
  2. Site visit or photos. For installations we visit to measure, check the electrical supply and agree positions. For simple repairs, a few photos and the model number often let us arrive with the right part.
  3. Written quote. Itemised, with the unit model, positions and electrical work listed separately.
  4. Approval. If you are in an estate or complex, you submit the plan to the estate or trustees. We can adjust it if they ask for changes.
  5. Installation. Most single-unit residential installs take half a day. We vacuum the refrigerant lines, pressure-test the joints and commission the system before we leave.
  6. Handover. We show you how to use the remote properly, how to clean the filters, and what the warranty covers. Our article on warranty and workmanship guarantees explains the difference between the manufacturer’s warranty and ours.

Frequently asked questions from Centurion clients

Do you work in all Centurion suburbs?

Yes. We cover the whole of Centurion, including Irene, Doringkloof, Lyttelton, Hennopspark, Eldoraigne, Wierda Park, Clubview, Zwartkop, Rooihuiskraal, The Reeds, Heuweloord, Kosmosdal, Highveld, Pierre van Ryneveld, Midstream and the estates towards Midrand.

Can you install in my estate?

Almost certainly, but you will usually need approval from the estate or body corporate first. We provide the details and photos they normally ask for, and we work to their rules on condenser placement and trunking.

Is an inverter unit really worth the extra cost?

For a room that is used every day through a Centurion summer, or for winter heating, yes. Inverter units ramp up and down instead of switching on and off, which uses less electricity and keeps the temperature steadier. For a guest room that is used a few times a year, a basic unit can make sense, and we will tell you honestly which fits.

How much does an installation or repair cost?

It depends on the unit size, pipe length, wall type and electrical work. We give written quotes after seeing the site. For general guidance on what drives the price, read our aircon repair cost guide.

My unit is leaking water inside. Is that serious?

Usually it is a blocked condensate drain or a frozen coil caused by dirty filters or low gas. Switch the unit off, rinse the filters and call us. Water damage to ceilings and walls is far more expensive than the repair.

Do you service office parks in Highveld Techno Park?

Yes. We install and maintain split, cassette and ducted systems for offices and showrooms, and we offer scheduled maintenance so units are cleaned and checked before the summer peak.
